I was in my thirties, on my morning run, hot and sweaty and slightly late for work, when an advert playing on the radio literally stopped me in my tracks. “The average person gets married at blah-blah years old, the average person has 2.5 kids, the average person retires at 65…” I thought to myself, “Wow (that’s not the actual word I used!)… I still need to work for a living for longer than I have actually been alive up to this point – I really need to think about doing something I actually like doing!!”
82 800 hours of your life will be spent working… that’s a lot of time to wish you were doing something else!
I often wish I could have known earlier that I could find a job that had meaning, fitted with my values, suited my personality and my aptitudes and that I would look forward to doing every day. If you’re working full-time at 37.5 hours per week, you’ll work around 1 800 hours a year, and if you work from when you’re 19 to 65, that’s approximately 82 800 hours of your life that will be spent working… that’s a lot of time to wish you were doing something else!

The short version of my long story was that I went back to University and continued with the pathway that I had diverted from 20 years earlier, studying to become a Psychologist. My training included an extensive focus on Psychometric testing, and one of my primary areas of interest was career guidance, with a focus on measuring and integrating occupational interests, aptitudes or abilities, personality type and personal values.
Imagine giving your child insights into their particular areas of strength and abilities and matching them with career options that they may not have thought of before…
